I found this mission was one of the hardest to accomplish on the game but if you plan your root well it is easy.
Firstly put your starting troop near the eastern border they will hold of the attacks now start to build a decent economy 5 apple farms 5 saw pits a market 6 dairy farms and loads and 5 pearmakers and 5 arrow makers also about 6 hops farms 1 mill and 2 eal ponds and 5 hunters post. In this mission rats and crime is a very big issue so i would build a guard house and a courthouse and a falcons nest as soon as possible so your popularity dosent drop.
Once you have built a decent economy build a wall all around your castle and continue to thicken it as you progress. You can also add a wall around the south near the bridge that will stop any southern attacks.
know you have a secure castle build loads of troops mainly spearmen you will need these later on. know it is time to attack olaf some people like to do olaf last because he is the hardest but i like to get the hardest out of the way after you have done this it is easy and you can build a huge army to battle edwin but remember that the troops you build on this mission will cary on to mission 2 which is a very hard mission so build alot of troops.Any way bring all the troops you have made i used about 40 archers, 65 spearmen bring them along the cost until they are behind the trees near olafs fort they should be in line with his gate then simply destroy the gate and place your archers just in front of it for cover fire know highlight your spearmen and continuosly keep pressing on olaf and then victory will be yours hazar.
now to take over the estates is very easy once you have establised a great army the only problem will be there little annoying archers.
Know edwin will attack i hope you have strengthend your wall like i told you two and you can even add some lookout towers for extra protection put loads of your archers on the wall nearest olafs fort to fend off edwins attack then put loads off spearmen near the stairwell you have built and loads near the fire and the some in the keep. I had over 100 archers, 70 spearmen, and some crossbowmen. Even tho they are launching a big attack it is no match for your walls crawling with archers.
Know to invade edwins castle. There are two basic ways to breach Edwin's castle, knocking a hole in his wall with catapults, or scaling the wall with troops using laddermen. Either method will work quite well in this mission, but you need to be mindful of the fact that you will be taking over and defending this castle in the following mission, and it will be in whatever state you leave it.
I think you're better off taking Edwin's castle without disturbing a brick so you won't have to repair it later. No matter how many troops you decide to use, they can be deployed in the following similar fashion. Attacking on the western flank seems the easiest. Move your archers up incrementally to the southern edge of the westernmost marsh and take out all of Edwin's troops outside the walls that are in range. Massing them on the edge of the marsh should trip the western set of burning logs, which will be stopped short by the marsh. Inch up until they trip.
When safe, send in four or five laddermen (too many and they'll spread out in front of the untripped logs). Advance spearmen, archers, and crossbowmen to the base of the wall. Be sure none will spill over in front of the untripped, second set of wall logs to the right. Have a small group of spearmen deal with the war hounds. When ladders are in place send spearmen up, targeting them to the top of the round tower. Send half the archers to the top of the gatehouse, and half to the top of the left-hand wall. Split the crossbowmen, if used, into thirds, one group to the top of the wall, one to the gatehouse, and one to the tower. This troop disbursement for the missile troops is quite arbitrary. Don't dawdle. Be sure all your troops are up on the walls before the logs reset.
When the walls and tower are clear of enemy, advance all spearmen directly to the top of the keep for Edwin. Do not let them linger and smash any buildings. When engaged, Edwin the cowerd will surrender and you will place him in the stocks on to mission two that one is hard remember all the troops you have made will carry on two mission two but i would get them near the castle in mission one because mounted knights attack quite earlie on.
if this walk through has not helped you sorry but good luck. |

Though I've had SH2 a long time I only recently got a video card with enough HP to run it, so I am just now working thru the POW.
I try to approach most battles tactically because I find it more fun and challenging than brute force. Here are some tricks on the Olaf task:
1) How to avoid subsequent siege attacks:
Right after the first siege, recruit 5 archers - sell stone and wood if you have to, and make bow/spear production a priority.
Have your squad of archers move out on Olaf's territory. It helps to have a gatehouse DIRECTLY across from his stockpile. The archers will only take out a few guys but as they withdraw, your archers on the walls (a tower helps) will inflict massive damage on anyone chasing.
When your squad retreats, recruit 1-3 more archers (as many as weapons, gold and honor allow). Then send the larger force out again IMMEDIATELY.
Using this RIF (Recon In Force) technique over and over, your task force gets larger and larger and Olaf's forces get smaller and smaller very quickly. By time you get to 20-25 archers they barely have to withdraw and can venture deeper and deeper. With Olaf's depleted troop strength, he is unable to mount any sieges.
2. Contain Olaf
Keep recruiting archers (those darn axe throwers will get a few). But break off 2 squads of 5 to begin flanking attacks. The main force remains near the stockpile killing anything that comes out of the fort (and providing covering fire for the flankers). You can start pulling archers off your walls if you like, since he is very much on the defensive.
The right flank squad can provide covering fire on the walls from the stockpile to the gate; The left flank from the stockpile to the waterline.
Recruit 10 or so spearmen to come out and wreck everything near the stockpile. This will evoke a counterattack, but Olaf hasn't got much by this point.
Split the Spearmen into 3 groups, one each for the RIF force, and the 2 flanking squads. The spearmen destroy stuff while the archers provide covering fire. New spearmen recruited get stationed to STAND GROUND in between so that you have Olaf half surrounded! These guys also keep him from being able to rebuild as he would like.
Eventually you can station 2-3 in front of the gate so that he is bottled up and you can maneuver with impunity. If you station 6-8 archers on the east ridge where the iron mines are, they can shoot inside the fort.
You can also recruit armed peasants to go out by the bridges to wreck farms. Once I was able to station a peasant in the stockpile and watch it dwindle as I repeatedly destroyed Inns, farms etc.
3 Kill Olaf without storming the fort
The land along the waterline is raised. This seems to be so that if you try to sneak any troops in along there the mounted archers in the fort can shoot them.
But there is a small piece of land next to the western shipwreck where 3 - sometimes 4 - archers can stand and target Olaf. No need for an engineer's guild or laddermen. It is hard to tell when such things are a flaw or by design. I've unlocked this map and lowered the ground so I am not tempted.
Even if you storm the fort, if you bottle him up first, you take many fewer casualties. There is no need to attack the Keep - the archers can get Olaf from the walls.
4. Edwin's attack
Right after Olaf dies, Edwin attacks. Playing this way, I found I can kill Olaf much sooner, but I am also left with fewer troops at that point. Even so, rather than defending from the walls, there are 2 natural bottle necks Ed's troops have to pass thru - the 2 bridges. This gives you a much better tactical advantage compared to them spread out along the walls.
Rush everyone to the bridge area (pull every one off the walls too). Station spearmen forward on the bridges. Edwin's force arrives in such a poor formation it is pretty easy to wipe them all out. The spearmen slow them down while the archers send them to visit Olaf and Elvis.
Very cool game. If I'd known it was this cool, I'd have gotten a better card sooner. ;)

I have a strategy that makes defending much easier.
First, use up all of the stone on a single wide wall. Start from the south and go to the beach. It will not reach, so place your archers a bit inside the walls.
Recruit about twenty archers after building your defenses and economy. It is up to you how you build it, but I suggest eight bow workshops, eight saw pits, five ox tethers and three quaries. Send the archers (twenty or more) through five estates (clearing out the enemy first) to get one mission done. Next, place some dairy farms, convert some flecters to make crossbows, and build a few tanners. Get about forty archers near Olaf's walls, but DO NOT KILL OLAF YET. The archers should pick off most of his defenses, leaving the path clear for a different person to clear the way.
Get forty archers and fifty crossbow men. Build a seige camp near Edwin's walls and prepare. Get two cats and about five catapults. Move your archers in range of the ground troops, but sitll far enough from the crossbowmen. Destroy the walls with your catapults, and charge in and kill Edwin. OLAF SHOULD BE ALIVE.
Now, you get all the goods from your own castle, and until Sir Willaim kills Olaf, you have plenty of goods for a new defense. Olaf will try and uproot you several times, including at the beggining in your castle and after you kill Edwin and take his castle.
Wait for Sir Willaim to kill Olaf (which he will easily) and you should have a bolstered defence capable of holding off the invasion.[Edited on 06/10/08 @ 10:48 AM]

Ok...the walkthrough by Stratego, I have an error, Edwin is under control by Lord Barclay, aka the hammer, noet angus mcloud, aka the bull. you say edwin is chastised by the bull but it is by the hammer!thank you, and please take this into recognition |
