Raid on Ragnar’s Fjord
Historic Background:
For many centuries, Scandinavia has been the Viking’s origin home, strictly speaking all the territories that we call Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Most people there lived on agriculture, mainly in those easily accessible regions along the Norwegian shores well known as “Fjords”. The Vikings used to rear various domestic animals such as pigs, oxen and sheep. Generally, the villages were widely spread out, since the farmers were able to cultivate their field crops adjacent to the farms. Thus, they had no long distance to cover for the work on their fields.
In the beginning of the Viking era, there weren’t any larger settlements in Scandinavia. Only steadily arising trade caused the foundation of towns or urban-like communities. The Viking population on the whole however, remained villagers, and they managed to provide themselves with everyday goods and food, for being independent of any traders or manual workers.
As everybody knows, during the Viking period immense waves of emigration came from Scandinavia. The reasons for this historic event have not been completely clarified yet until today, and there are still lots of speculation on it. One of the most probable theories tells us that the cultivation of arable land was getting more and more scarce. Agriculture was limited to those few fertile areas on the fjords, and the mountainous inland wasn’t suitable at all to be used as farmland. Therefore, many Viking tribes were forced to explore those unknown or deserted countries far from Scandinavia.
On board of their fast and impressive ships (so called “Dragon Boats”) they crossed the Northern Atlantic and discovered many new islands like Iceland, Greenland or the Faroer Islands, and even reached the North American continent under the leadership of Leif Ericsson. Some of them also boarded peaceful trading vessels in capturing different luxury goods as gold, wine, silk or oriental spices. Others conquered and raided the coasts of England, France and Spain by successfully colonizing some foreign regions (e.g. the Normandy).
The current situation in Ragnar’s Fjord:
How was Scandinavia getting over this bloodletting of human being? Let’s have a look at Norway and exemplarily zoom in on the Norwegian coast by picking out Ragnar’s Fjord.
You are Prince Eric, back home again to succeed to your father’s estate. For six long years, you’ve been away in various Southern European countries and eager to study the knowledge, manners and customs of other foreign people. Now after your father’s death, you are charged with a responsible burden:
Restore a productive economy in a former thriving land, hire as many soldiers as possible and establish safe conditions for all tribal followers who once took shelter far away in the dark forests. Being scared of Duke Olaf’s plundering troops who are terrorizing the native population, many families avoided to return to their homes, and preferred living in poverty outside in the wilderness. Olaf and his rapacious ally the “Bull” are tending to raid all over the land, so keep watchful!
For many years, you have been engaged to marry Lady Serena, the princess of a neighboring tribe, but things have changed. Unfortunately, Lady Serena was taken prisoner and incarcerated in a hardly accessible tower located on a rough craggy peninsula. Guarded by some unscrupulous murderers who may not lose any time to kill her if anybody should dare to rescue her life. Do not capitulate to Olaf who is still bent on extending his supremacy…remember, you are Prince Eric, as strong as a bear, and you have sworn to teach him a lesson!
Victory requirements:
Mission 1: Acquire 100 stone, 25 maces, 50 leather arms
No bears on the map
Mission 2: Control 3 estates
Rescue Lady Serena
Please, let me know how you managed to get through the two missions. As always, reviews or ratings are welcome.
Happy gaming!

P.S.: I’ve added an extra hint file for your use if necessary…

Playability: 4
(Playability was very good the mission layout along with troop production settings made the map feel like it was an official SH2 campaign map. However, there was one little thing that I tried and to my misfortune I found a bit of a glitch in the map... I wont say how to do it but it should be fixed. E-mail me at qzar3456@comcast.net if you want me to tell you.)
Balance: 5
(Good enough to play the mission. You could have given the player the ability to make Hops Farms though.)
Creativity: 5
(Very Creative! Once again you have made an excellent map!)
Map Design: 4
(As said above, EXCELLENT! A lot of water was flowing the wrong way however...)
Story/Instructions: 5
(Also as said above, EXCELLENT!!!!!)
Additional Comments: This was a very good and fun map! I hope that you continue to make them for SH2

Playability: 5
Everything worked well for me. Had to do a few restarts for Mission 1, until I worked out the needed strategy. Mission 2 was easier, but no less dangerous for the strategy needed to overcome.
Balance: 5
Very nice. I kept expecting one last invasion that never came, but that was ok!
Creativity: 5
A great job, and in your scripting.
Map Design: 4
Only negative thing was the water flow as Sir White Wolf mentioned, but otherwise perfect for the scenario!
Story/Instructions: 5
Great story!
Additional Comments:
This map reminds me of how my style has evolved over time. The beginning demands all your attention to detail and multi-tasking abilities. My first attempt was utter failure, until I realized how to beat it, from something I had done once before, in getting your economy started, and your defense set. I really enjoyed playing this Stratego, although at times, I grumbled to myself, this is almost a War Scenario, not a Peace. Great job! |

Hello, Stratego . . .
I want to thank you for some great maps! I hadn't played too many of the peace scenarios until recently (not enough time for everything I guess) but am now hooked on yours. So far I've gotten around to this one, "spit fire" and "footprint." Your combination of scripting, storyline, terrain and balance makes the maps a real pleasure to play. "Lagoon" is probably next on the schedule. Thanks for all the hard work and attention to detail!
By the way, just to be curious, which one is your favorite so far?
Later . . .

Hi Odyss,
thanks for your compliments, and taking your time for playing my maps; as for my personal favourite map ... it's the "volcano thing" so far, but I'm about to create another new one that will hopefully be released soon...the title: "Lost in no man's land".

Playability: 5
I had no problems with this map at all. It was very playable from start to finish.
Balance: 4.5
I would give a 5 here other than the fact that from the start the enemy had the upper hand in mission one, but latter missions the invasions came less and less, giving me the upper hand.
Creativity: 5
A great idea through out, completely original.
Map Design: 5
An excellent map design that included everything a player needs to get a win
Story/Instructions: 5
I always enjoy Stratego's stories and the included hint files go along way in contributing to a win.
Additional Comments:Stratego's use of bay area and beaches invading and supporting troop arrivals was a nice touch here on this map. You could actually watch the ships sail up into the bay toward the landing.
Good job Stratego!
