For those who don't know obsidion is a map I built ages ago. It is the best I have made!
If you are going have downloaded the other version but not played it download this.
The skinny estate is bigger now but I havn't got the right minimap yet!
Hello... I am back for good (sighs from the crowd)
This map is pretty good I think and I enjoyed making it!
I wrote a story to go with it which took half an hour so here it is:
Olbod’s blood
There was once a peaceful land ruled by Lord Olbod the Kind at his castle in Riiche Mountain. Under him the land of salestria prospered. He did not do this alone though; his great and good knights helped him. Each one of them specialised in a specific art.
His most trusted was his knight of defence who was also a smith. He made shields that would receive no more than a scratch from a mace the size of someone’s head, and chain male that could stop an arrow moving as fast as the wind. But his one fault was greed. He even asked Lord Olbod to pay him a heavy sum for any piece of armour. Soon he became the richest person in the mountain and naturally the other knights became jealous.
Eventually one of them went so far as to steal from the treasury. As a punishment he was made to spend a night in the chapel praying but he was let off really. The knights grew bolder and bolder until they started slaughtering farmers for their land. When the king found out what his three most trusted companions were doing he was very angry. They came to him but all he could bear to do was tell them not to do it again. This earned him the title Lord Olbod, the Merciful.
His enemies took this as a sign of weakness and gathered their armies. Almost as soon as it began the war was over and Lord Olbod had a nice big chunk of land. To his horror he woke up to find that his knights had stolen the new land and were building on it. His fury was terrible to behold you could see the spittle flying from hid lips as he banished them. Their sentence was to spend seven years upon the land they had stolen and that they were not to set foot anywhere else for seven years.
Seven years later the Lord sent out a message that the knights were to come back to his kingdom and they came…! With siege engines and an army larger than any in history. The Era of Olbod was at an end. The Era of Blood was dawning.
Their attack was swift and they killed all inside, from Lord Olbod down to the lowliest peasant. All except a small group who escaped more by luck than any thing else. The group that got away thirsted for revenge and set about building up resources and soldiers. For three years they gathered anything that might be useful. They were about to launch their hopeless attack when a huge earthquake shook the mountain. Hundreds of thousands were killed and a population of 700 0000; 350 000 of which were soldiers was reduced to 235 0000; 76 0000 of which were soldiers. The odds had been evened…
Another unexpected surprise was to find that the now appropriately named Blood Mountain. Was sat upon the largest Iron mine in the world, thus making it even more precious. Strangely the colossal water feature was untouched and now with nothing holding its flow back created a stream just deep and wide enough to make it impassable. The Knights wasted no time building a bridge however, which gave you enough time to assemble your forces.
As the final hour approaches rumors reach your ears. Rumors that there have been disagreements in the enemy camp…
You wonder if they are true…
Well do you like it!? I changed it in some places from the origional but It has not made a difference to the ending... I hope!
I have updated after I tested each estate and now, I as a player, really enjoy playing it. I am afraid I have not finished a game yet but I know that all of the players attack you, and build proper castles and there is no where that is impassible...
ENJOY!!!!
Oh yeah. You also get a crest for all of the knights, and Olbods star for yourself! (another crest)

Well... I played it again as requested... this time it works. A couple things...
The access to the northern territory was fixed per my earlier comments, but it still has a "hole" of another estate color inside of it... a slight disadvantage for that territory. The best way to check for estate holes is to use the "flag" icon to see the different colors that you have assigned to the estate lands... then you can see if you missed any small spots.
Balance 1 vs the computer was decent... somewhat difficult to begin... get no more than one estate for supplies and defend your territory well, and the computer will take over all the other estates. Then you build a force and march over their home estates and take over everything... I can't tell how balanced this would be in a multi-player situation.
Creativity is good... map design still kind of average for me... I understand people have different styles but for me, this just doesn't do it. The biggest thing is very little "blending" between various terrain types... it is still "swamp" WHAP "iron hill" WHAP "rocky hill"... just not my personal taste. I would rather see ONE terrain type that is designed like real terrain than trying to incorporate all of the various tools in the map editor on one map.
The Story.... is OUTSTANDING!!! If someone takes the time, thought, and effort to create a "mindset" for the player to better experience their map, then they deserve a "5". You deserve a 6 for thought and detail for your story...
I hope this helps, and I am glad I got the game running again to try out your update! Sincerely, Cat[Edited on 06/13/06 @ 09:56 AM]

Amen Cat,

I'm glad that Cat picked up on those problems,
and I hope that for one such "legendary" as
yourself, that my review won't be as bad....

I an not legendry!!!!!
My map the river styx was a one off and I do not think I could make one as good again.
The whole point of reviews is to tell people what they could improve on!
Any way, almost all maps on this site have been updated at least once!
I will work on this map until it gets at least a 3.5, AND WILL UPDATE A HUNDRED TIMES UNTIL i GET IT RIGHT!!!!!
PS: If this map was rated so low partly because you got the impression that I was saying it was going to be legendry I am sorry and ashamed of myself. [Edited on 06/06/06 @ 02:26 PM]

Now thats said and done we can go onto the map...
The waterfall that came out of the stone piller was meant to be some part of the old castle in the story that I wrote and am going to re-write as does the river that just ends. But you wouldn't know that. I realize now that the story plays an important part in this map and will re-write with the update.
Now onto the playability
I will have to do some serious re-moddeling here and in the balance.
I do not think the map design deserved so low but I agree that the trickle of water is pretty bad and will make it better. your point about shading is taken into account as well!
All in all that was a very very helpful review!
You have my thanks...

No I don't think badly of you Lord Cliff,
I personally thought that the water fountains
were a nice touch:)
It's a nice map with varying regions of terrain. It's very creative, but it just needs
a little work thats all. Everyone has their
own design style, period the end.
I accept your apology as a fellow map maker,
and I hope you will enjoy my present and future maps:)
