The Viking War (Part I)
“A Free Man.”
By: SirWhiteWolf
-----------------------------------------------
Prologue
Some say that the most important things in life are money, religion, or a family. I do not agree. My name is Rufus Steel, and this is the story of how certain events which are now occurring began…
Warfare, bloodshed, death, darkness… All of these things enveloped the land of Britain, as well as many other countries. Ours just seemed as if… It was the first to fall…
My family had become slaves to the people known as the Vikings. Merciless bloodthirsty curs they were! From the very start, they burned down our farms and villages, forcing all of the peasant workers to submit to them… Or pay the ultimate price. I was but a young boy, of about the age of 13, when I was put before their leader. A man almost 6 foot 5, with an axe almost as big… This man whom I stood before was the man I would spend my very life to seek, and eliminate! This man was none other than Olaf Grimtooth, the Viking warlord.
As I stared at this man he suddenly arose and summoned forth two of the biggest of the Vikings. He then said, “Bring this whelp’s parents to me! It is time to see where his loyalties lie!” Immediately after hearing his command, the two Vikings quickly gathered up my mother, my father, and my brother, Lance, and brought them to us. I could see the fear in their faces and I suddenly knew what horror was about to take place. They were going to die… And there was nothing I could do to stop it… So I turned around to see if my suspicions were correct. However when I turned around something happened that I will never forget for the rest of my life… A pearl handled Viking longknife. I was handed this knife with only one command given along with it. Olaf said, “With this knife, kill your family, and you shall be a slave no longer. However, if you do not, you shall be a slave, forever…” I stood there for a minute or two staring at the knife. It seemed as if hours went by, and I found myself as if almost, in a trance. There I was, only a couple inches away from Olaf the King of all Vikings! I continue to look back on that day and wonder, “Why?!? Why did I not strike him dead?!?
I had made up my mind, and threw the knife to the ground! Little did I know that I would have been better off killing my family. For after only 2 years the Viking warlord would visit our home again and ask the same from not I, but from the rest of my family. However, the results would be different this time. This time, I was the one whose fate was to be decided. Each member of my family was handed a knife and was given the same command as I was, “With this knife, kill your son, and you shall be a slave no longer. However, if you do not, you shall be a slave, forever…” This time there was no hesitation, my parent’s took the knives and turned around slowly as if I was an animal and they were wolves, looking for a tasty prey. I could see no remorse in their faces when they turned to me. So I knew that my fate lied with God, and I did not resist them. I stood still and waited for my parents to be upon me with knife in hand. When suddenly I was also given a knife, it was Lance’s knife. Even when in a state of panic and confusion Lance stuck by me and said to me, “Take that knife in hand and fight for your life, fight for Freedom!” Upon hearing this word, something happened to me. I suddenly felt stronger and more confident then I ever had before! So I took my knife, and with two mighty thrusts, both my mother and my father fell dead.
I hastily picked up my knife and thrusted it into a loop in my ragged old belt, in order to create a type of sheath for it. This knife was mine! And if anyone tried to take it away from me, the same fate that befell my mother and father would also befall that poor foolish soul! After doing this I quickly ran to Lance’s side in order to protect him. When all of the sudden, a guard came up from behind and tackled me. I spun several times along the floor and when I had finally stopped, I found that Olaf had slain Lance dead! Never before had I though that this could happen… Never before had I imagined that Lance could be dead… I wanted to run, run as fast as I possibly could. And so I did.
Ever since then I have sworn revenge for my brother’s death! I have sworn revenge against the most vileness creature to ever walk the Earth! Olaf Grimtooth!
And so it came to pass that I had become something that my brother and I always sought… A Freeman! I eventually gained a sword and estate through the generosity of a kind noble. This is where the predicament first began…
----------------------
Side Story (Mission I)
----------------------
After acquiring an estate of my own I have found out that the so called “generous noble”, was working for my sworn enemy, Olaf Grimtooth! This treachery is unforgivable!!! And I will make sure that whatever Olaf paid him to do this, I will double back ten times with destruction! But unfortunately, he is not our main concern right now. Olaf’s troops have encircled the island and have blocked the escape root to our only boat. We must crush Olaf’s forces here and now if we ever want to leave this island again! Failure is not an option if we ever want to get to Olaf!

Objectives
----------
Mission I.
Win: Acquire 100 Meat & 25 Spears
Lose: Your Lord Dies
-----------------------
Side Story (Mission II)
-----------------------
With a proper stockpile of food, weapons, and wood, I am are now able to take the village below that belongs to Olaf, and gain even more leverage against his berserkers. There is also a monastery in the village that Olaf has destroyed. The monks there are held hostage and are not able to rebuild it. They say that if we help them rebuild the monastery, they will supply us with some Warrior Monks. We will have to do this later after we capture the village.
----------
Objectives
----------
Mission 2.
Win: Capture Estates: 1/2
Lose: Your lord dies.
Lose: 35 Months
-----------------------
Side Story (Mission III)
-----------------------
Even though we may have weakened Olaf’s forces on the island, I do not think that he has finished attacking quite yet. We had better start preparing for the worst, just in case. We should also look in to rebuilding the monastery. If another invasion is on its way we should probably have the monks on our side.

Objectives
----------
Mission 3.
Win: No Enemy or Enemy Invasions Left
Lose: Your lord dies |

This map goes at an excellent, varied pace. Starting with a nice, slow-paced economic mission with little detterent and then going to a tactical moderate-paced mission to capture an estate, to finally, a fast-paced mission where one is trying to eliminate viking camps on the map while defending his own estate. There were no bugs in this map whatsoever, which is well done.
Balance: 5
This map was quite challenging at times, especially the second mission. It's pretty perfect I'd say. The new updated map version has much better time between invasions, and a larger (+50%) final invasion. I think that a time limit is still needed on the first mission, but that is too small of a problem to warrant a point reduction.
Creativity: 5
Dead campfires and white water over the keep's fire to mimic smoke? That's quite creative if you ask me! I also liked the two spearmen guarding the boat.
Map Design: 5
The island carries amazing detail, and the shoreline is well done. The suggestion of making it a calderic island was carried out marvelously by SirWhiteWolf. Hopefully, StoneBreaker will recover from his er... "sea-sickness".
Story/Instructions: 5
Another nice, long, descriptive storyline by SirWhiteWolf. With clear and even explained instructions. A definite and obvious 5.
Additional Comments:
Excellent map, SirWhiteWolf. I like maps where the technology is very limited, such as this one. I very much enjoyed strategically using my lord and spearmen together to take out the camps. [Edited on 05/16/07 @ 06:40 PM]

As said by Lord Tanthos it plays smoothly Their are NO bugs whatsoever!!!
Balance: 5
Very well balanced. Hard at some times easier at others.
Creativity: 5
Again the smoke over the keep fires and the dead campfire what give this a full and worthy five. (I would have said the vocano idea but that was not your idea (Well done Lord Tanthos)!
Map Design: 4.4
This very good but i cannot give you a five simply for the fact it is such a little size landmass you actually had to design. However that little landmass still earns you a very high 4
Story/Instructions: 5
A great story!
Additional Comments:
This is a very fun and pretty map!
Really sorry for bringing down your "first ever 5.0 map" but i cann't give you a five for such a small map... [Edited on 05/19/07 @ 01:08 AM]

This was an extremely easy map and i loved it! I loved how you set it so that you can only get the exact amount (so we don't have cheaters getting unlimited or something)
Balance: 5
It's just beyond compare. Nothing more to say.
Creativity: 5
This was a very creative map and storyline. Was that white water above the ashes? If so that was a nice touch.
Map Design: 5
Great map. I loved how you made it an island.
Story/Instructions: 5
Storyline was very good. I didn't need much instruction before i was up and running.
Additional Comments:
Thank you very much for making this map. It's very nice to see a map that isn't from a beginner. |

Very well done, no bugs or mishaps were found.
Balance: 4
You balanced it well, although mission two required 100 spearmen in limited time, which maybe should have been categorized as "hard"! Without any difficulty though, what fun is a map?
Creativity: 5
The map design and invasion style were as creative as good be.
Map Design: 5
The island terrain was done perfectly!
Story/Instructions: 5
Very interesting story, although a bit lengthy! :)
Additional Comments:
I plan to play the second part this week, you did a great job! |
